YONI 2013, Compost, Wild Flower Seed, and Wooden Signs
"Yoni" is an ecological, relational, and symbolic painting project installed by a collaborative group of earth stewards. The piece weaves together ecological restoration, environmental awareness, and the mythic and symbolic connections we hold with the land into a public artwork. An eroding public trail was covered up with a Yoni symbol painted with compost that was impregnated with native wildflower seeds. While one trail was laid to rest, another regenerative switchback trail was introduced and signs encouraged the public to establish it. The artwork opened up discussion around our relationships with the land, community art expression, and the role of the feminine.
