Ecological Art, Design, and Education

APPLE TREE, 2010, apples, wire, string, tree. installation site: St Marks Church Plaza, 10 st and 2nd Ave, NYC

The installation explored the relationship a city has with its food source. unfortunately fruit trees are banned in the city due to legal issues. But what if we could re-imagine urban streets lined with fruit trees, where kids could pick fresh apples in their walk to school? A landscape where lifestyle, health and nutrition, and ecological systems are more integrated? Where one can live in an urban setting and still live alongside their food source? Apples purchased from the local farmer's market were hung on the branches of a tree to re-create an apple tree within the urban environment. The piece was an opportunity for people to examine where their apples come from and to then be able to pick apples 'fresh' from a tree in their neighborhood. Apple Tree questioned the role of street trees in the city and monitored the responsiveness of people towards engaging with their environment (does one even notice the apples? and will they dare pick one?).   Apple Tree lasted 7 hours before a city parks service worker dismantled its fruit.
